"I hope, my dear," said Mr. Bennet to his wife, as they were at breakfast the next morning, "that you have ordered a good dinner to-day, because I have reason to expect an addition to our family party."

다음 날 아침 "여보, 오늘 저녁 저녁 식탁을 좀 잘 만들었으면 하오. 우리 가족에 한 사람을 더하고 싶소." 하고 식사중에 미스터 베넷이 말했다.

"Who do you mean, my dear? I know of nobody that is coming, I am sure, unless Charlotte Lucas should happen to call in—And I hope MY dinners are good enough for her. I do not believe she often sees such at home."

"누구를 말하세요? 미스 루카스 이외에는 올 사람이 없는 것으로 알고 있는데요. 만약 그녀가 온다면 내가 준비한 저녁 식사면 충분해요. 자기 집에서는 그 정도도 구경하기 힘들거예요."

"The person of whom I speak is a gentleman, and a stranger."

Mrs. Bennet's eyes sparkled. "A gentleman and a stranger! It is Mr. Bingley, I am sure! Well, I am sure I shall be extremely glad to see Mr. Bingley. But—good Lord! how unlucky! There is not a bit of fish to be got to-day. Lydia, my love, ring the bell—I must speak to Hill this moment."

"It is NOT Mr. Bingley," said her husband; "it is a person whom I never saw in the whole course of my life."

This roused a general astonishment; and he had the pleasure of being eagerly questioned by his wife and his five daughters at once.

After amusing himself some time with their curiosity, he thus explained:
"About a month ago I received this letter; and about a fortnight ago I answered it, for I thought it a case of some delicacy, and requiring early attention. It is from my cousin, Mr. Collins, who, when I am dead, may turn you all out of this house as soon as he pleases."

Jane and Elizabeth tried to explain to her the nature of an entail. They had often attempted to do it before, but it was a subject on which Mrs. Bennet was beyond the reach of reason, and she continued to rail bitterly against the cruelty of settling and estate away from a family of five daughters, in favour of a man whom nobody cared anything about.

"It certainly is a most iniquitous affair," said Mr. Bennet, "and nothing can clear Mr. Collins from the guilt of inheriting Longbourn. But if you will listen to his letter, you may perhaps be a little softened by his manner of expressing himself."

"Why, indeed; he does seem to have had some filial scruples on that head, as you will hear."

(역주; 다음의 편지는 베넷가의 친척인 미스터 콜린스에게서 온 것이다. 소설에서 정확한 친척관계는 밝히고 있지 않지만 가까운 친척이 아닌 것은 확실하다. 영어에서 cousin 이라는 단어는 사촌을 지칭할 때 사용될 수도 있지만 3촌을 넘어서는 친척을 통틀어 지칭할 때 사용되기도 한다. 미스터 콜린스는 후자이다. 베넷과 콜린스는 다른 성을 쓰고 있어 혹시 콜린스 엄마나 할머니의 성이 베넷이 아닌가 의심하는 분들도 있겠으나 그런 경우에는 콜린스가 한정 상속의 상속자가 될 수 없다. 당시 영국의 관행으로 보아 둘 중의 한 가족이 성을 바꾼 것으로 짐작된다.

남자 자손에게 영지를 넘기는 유산상속제도인 한정상속 때문에 아들이 없는 미스터 베넷의 영지를 받을 권리를 가진 사람으로 미스터 베넷과 이 사람의 아버지 사이에 적지 않은 법적 분쟁이 있었던 것으로 짐작되며 특히 베넷 부인은 이렇게 되어 자기들의 땅이 딸들이 아닌 다른 사람에게 넘어가는 것을 처절히 비통하게 생각하고 있다.)

"Dear Sir,—

"The disagreement subsisting between yourself and my late
honoured father always gave me much uneasiness, and since I
have had the misfortune to lose him, I have frequently wished to
heal the breach; but for some time I was kept back by my own
doubts, fearing lest it might seem disrespectful to his memory for me to be on good terms with anyone with whom it had always
pleased him to be at variance,—'There, Mrs. Bennet.'—My
mind, however, is now made up on the subject, for having
received ordination at Easter, I have been so fortunate as to be
distinguished by the patronage of the Right Honourable Lady
Catherine de Bourgh, widow of Sir Lewis de Bourgh, whose
bounty and beneficence has preferred me to the valuable rectory
of this parish, where it shall be my earnest endeavour to demean
myself with grateful respect towards her Ladyship, and be ever
ready to perform those rites and ceremonies which are instituted
by the Church of England.

As a clergyman, moreover, I feel it my duty to promote and establish the blessing of peace in all
families within in the reach of my influence; and on these
grounds I flatter myself that my present overtures are highly
commendable, and that the circumstance of my being next in the
entail of Longbourn estate will be kindly overlooked on your
side, and not lead you to reject the offered olive-branch. I
cannot otherwise than be concerned at being the means of
injuring your amiable daughters, and beg leave to apologise for
it, as well as to assure you of my readiness to make them every
possible amends—but of this hereafter. If you should have no
objection to receive me into your house, I propose myself the
satisfaction of waiting on you and your family, Monday,
November 18th, by four o'clock, and shall probably trespass on
your hospitality till the Saturday se'ennight following, which I
can do without any inconvenience, as Lady Catherine is far from
objecting to my occasional absence on a Sunday, provided that
some other clergyman is engaged to do the duty of the day.—I
remain, dear sir, with respectful compliments to your lady and
daughters, your well-wisher and friend,

"At four o'clock, therefore, we may expect this peace-making gentleman," said Mr. Bennet, as he folded up the letter. "He seems to be a most conscientious and polite young man, upon my word, and I doubt not will prove a valuable acquaintance, especially if Lady Catherine should be so indulgent as to let him come to us again."

"그러니 4시가 되면 우리는 이 평화의 사도인 신사분을 맞는 거요" 하고 편지를 접으며 미스터 베넷이 말했다. "맹세코, 그는 가장 양심적이고 공손한 젊은이 같소. (미스터 베넷은 속으로 빌어먹을 하고 말했을 것이 틀림 없다) 나는 이 만남이 서로가 알게 되는데 가치있는 일이라는 사실을 의심하지 않소. 특히 레이디 캐떠린이 아주 관대해서 다음 번에 그를 다시 이곳에 오는 것을 허락한다면 말이요.

"There is some sense in what he says about the girls, however, and if he is disposed to make them any amends, I shall not be the person to discourage him."

"Though it is difficult," said Jane, "to guess in what way he can mean to make us the atonement he thinks our due, the wish is certainly to his credit."

Elizabeth was chiefly struck by his extraordinary deference for Lady Catherine, and his kind intention of christening, marrying, and burying his parishioners whenever it were required.

엘리자베뜨는 그가 레이디 캐떠린에게 보여주는 대단한 존경심과, 언제든지 필요하다면 자신의 교구 사람들에게 영세를 주고, 결혼 주례를 하고, 장례식을 집전하려 한다는 친절한 의도에 충격을 받았다.

"He must be an oddity, I think," said she. "I cannot make him out. There is something very pompous in his style. And what can he mean by apologising for being next in the entail? We cannot suppose he would help it if he could. Could he be a sensible man, sir?"

"In point of composition," said Mary, "the letter does not seem defective. The idea of the olive-branch perhaps is not wholly new, yet I think it is well expressed."

"작문의 관점에서 보자면 그 편지에 결점은 없는 것 같아. 올리브 가지를 내미는 아이디어는 전혀 새로울 것이 없다해도 표현을 잘 했다고 생각해." 하고 메리가 말했다.

To Catherine and Lydia, neither the letter nor its writer were in any degree interesting. It was next to impossible that their cousin should come in a scarlet coat, and it was now some weeks since they had received pleasure from the society of a man in any other colour. As for their mother, Mr. Collins's letter had done away much of her ill-will, and she was preparing to see him with a degree of composure which astonished her husband and daughters.

캐떠린과 리디아에게는 편지도 그리고 그 편지를 쓴 사람도 전혀 관심의 대상이 아니었다. 그들의 사촌이 자주색 옷을 입고 온 다는 것은 불가능과 같은 말이었다. 그들이 다른 색의 옷을 입은 남자들의 사회에서 즐거움을 맞보는게 몇 주 되었다. 그들의 엄마에 대해 말해 보자면, 미스터 콜린스의 편지는 그녀의 악감정을 많이 제거해 주었으며 그를 차분한 심정으로 맞을 준비를 했다. 이는 그녀의 남편과 딸들을 놀라게 했다.

Mr. Collins was punctual to his time, and was received with great politeness by the whole family. Mr. Bennet indeed said little; but the ladies were ready enough to talk, and Mr. Collins seemed neither in need of encouragement, nor inclined to be silent himself. He was a tall, heavy-looking young man of five-and-twenty. His air was grave and stately, and his manners were very formal.

미스터 콜린스는 정확한 시간에 도착했고 모든 가족들로 부터 상당히 예의바른 영접을 받았다. 미스터 베넷은 별로 말을 하지 않았지만 여인들은 말을 하고 싶었다. 미스터 콜린스는 말을 해 보라고 권해야 할 필요도 없었고 그 스스로도 조용히 있고싶어하는 것 같지도 않았다. 그는 키가 크고 육중해 보이는 젊은이로 스물 다섯살 이었다. 그가 풍기는 분위기는 진지하고 품위가 있었으며 그의 매너는 격식을 차리는 것이었다.

He had not been long seated before he complimented Mrs. Bennet on having so fine a family of daughters; said he had heard much of their beauty, but that in this instance fame had fallen short of the truth; and added, that he did not doubt her seeing them all in due time disposed of in marriage. This gallantry was not much to the taste of some of his hearers; but Mrs. Bennet, who quarreled with no compliments, answered most readily.

자리에 앉자마자 곧 그는 미세스 베넷에게 딸들이 있는 아름다운 가정에 대해 칭찬을 했다; 즉, 그는 딸들이 아름답다는 얘기를 누누히 들었지만 이렇게 직접 대하니 그 소문이 진실을 제대로 말하지 못했다고 말했다. 그리고 적절한 시간에 결혼시켜서 출가시키는데 전혀 문제가 없을 것이라 생각한다고 말했다. 이 찬사가 마음에 들지 않는 사람들이 가족 중에 있었다. 감사의 답도 하지 않고 심통을 부린 미세스 베넷은 즉시 대답했다.



"You are very kind, I am sure; and I wish with all my heart it may prove so, for else they will be destitute enough. Things are settled so oddly."

"You allude, perhaps, to the entail of this estate."

"이 영지의 한정 유산에 대해 말씀하시는 것 같군요."

"Ah! sir, I do indeed. It is a grievous affair to my poor girls, you must confess. Not that I mean to find fault with YOU, for such things I know are all chance in this world. There is no knowing how estates will go when once they come to be entailed."

"왜 않그렇겠수. 우리 불쌍한 딸들에게는 정말로 통탄할 일이지요. 콜린스씨도 인정하시지요. 뭐, 이것이 콜린스씨의 잘못이라고 말하는 것은 아니예요. 세상에는 별의 별 일들이 다 일어나니까요. 우리의 할아버지가 이 땅을 한정 유산으로 남긴다고 했을 때 이게 누구에게 갈 것이라고는 알지 못했을 테니까요."

"I am very sensible, madam, of the hardship to my fair cousins, and could say much on the subject, but that I am cautious of appearing forward and precipitate. But I can assure the young ladies that I come prepared to admire them. At present I will not say more; but, perhaps, when we are better acquainted—"


"아주머니, 저도 이 예쁜 사촌들이 곤란해 지는 것을 잘 인지하고 있고 이 주제에 대해 많이 얘기할 수 도 있습니다. 하지만, 제가 너무 앞으로 나서서 설치지 않으려고 조심합니다. 하지만 제가 아름다운 따님들에게 확실히 말씀 드릴 수 있는 것은 제가 여러분을 흠모할 준비를 하고 이곳에 왔다는 것입니다. 지금은 더 이상 말씀 드리지 않겠습니다. 하지만 우리가 좀더 알게 되면.."

He was interrupted by a summons to dinner; and the girls smiled on each other. They were not the only objects of Mr. Collin's admiration. The hall, the dining-room, and all its furniture, were examined and praised; and his commendation of everything would have touched Mrs. Bennet's heart, but for the mortifying supposition of his viewing it all as his own future property. The dinner too in its turn was highly admired; and he begged to know to which of his fair cousins the excellency of its cooking was owing. But he was set right there by Mrs. Bennet, who assured him with some asperity that they were very well able to keep a good cook, and that her daughters had nothing to do in the kitchen. He begged pardon for having displeased her. In a softened tone she declared herself not at all offended; but he continued to apologise for about a quarter of an hour.
