혼의 기쁨 Joy of the Soul
 
 하늘은 우리에게 몇 사람만을 사랑하기에는
 너무나도 크고 따뜻한 가슴을 주었다.
 온 인류와 세상을 품고도 남는 가슴이 있기에
 우리는 작은 자기를 넘어서는 혼의 사랑을 추구한다.

Heaven has given us hearts too great and warm to love
 only a few people. We pursue the love of the soul, which
 transcends our little selves, for we have hearts more than
 able to embrace all humanity and the world.
 
   

하늘은 우리에게 몇 사람만을 사랑하기에는
너무나도 크고 따뜻한 가슴을 주었다.
온 인류와 세상을 품고도 남는 가슴이 있기에
우리는 작은 자기를 넘어서는 혼의 사랑을 추구한다.

When I’ve done something good without hoping for
 any reward or without awareness that I’ve helped
 someone, there is a joy that rises in my heart. It is the
 joy of the soul.

 아무 대가도 바라지 않고,
 내가 누군가를 돕는다는 의식도 하지 않은 채
 좋은 일을 했을 때
 가슴에서 우러나는 기쁨이 있다.
 그것은 혼의 기쁨이다.
 
 아무 조건도 없는 평화로움
 아무 이유도 없는 기쁨과 흐뭇함
 가슴 속에 올라오는 한 가닥 작은 미소가 전부이나
 혼의 기쁨은 누가 알아주든 몰라주든
 홀로 스스로 기쁘다.
 그 기쁨은 절대적이고 오래 간다.

 Unconditional peace, spontaneous joy and
 satisfaction, and a little smile coming from the heart
 are my only rewards, but the joy of the soul is a joy all
 my own, whether or not someone recognizes it. That
 joy is absolute and long-lasting.
  
혼의 기쁨은 아무리 나누어 가져도 모자랄 일이 없다. 

The joy of the soul never runs out, no
 matter how much you may share it.
 
 다른 사람의 것을 빼앗거나 경쟁해서 채워지는 기쁨이 아니라
 다른 사람을 도와주고 잘 되게 함으로써 얻는
 상생의 기쁨이기 때문이다.

For it is a mutual joy obtained by helping others do
 well, not a joy taken from others or won in competition.
 
 혼의 기쁨이 커질 때
 우리는 천지간의 만물에
 측은지심을 품는
 큰 사랑을 알게 된다. 

When our joy of the soul grows, we come to know a great love that embraces
 compassion for all things in heaven and on earth.
 
 처음에는 가까이 있는 사람을
 돕고자 하는 마음이 생기고
 그 마음이 점차 커지면 사람뿐만 아니라
 이 세계 전체를 걱정하고,
 자신이 도울 일이 무엇일까를 생각하게 된다.
 
 그러한 마음을 품을 때
 우리 안의 생명이
 우리 스스로를 우러러본다.

At first, we develop a desire to help those nearby;
 when that heart gradually grows, we come to have
 concern for the whole world, not just human beings,
 and we begin to think about how we can help.
 When we have such an attitude, the life
 within us looks up to us in respect.
