Apostille in Australia

2021.05.14

Are you going overseas to study or work? You may be asked for a range of documents such as your degree, transcript, and other identity documents. If you are going overseas to get married, certificate of no impediment to marriage(CNI) would be required because the overseas authority may want poof that you are free to marry. So you must ask the receiving authority what documents they want, and which ones you must get apostilled.

What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is the process to verify a signature, stamp or seal on a document for use in foreign countries since the foreign governments need proof that the signatures of Australian officials on documents are genuine before they can be accepted.

Who can apostille documents within Australia?

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), through the Australian Passport Office in your capital city(Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney) will print or attach a certificate in the form of an  ❛Apostille❜ or an ❛Authentication❜ stating certain facts : on the basis of the country where the documents will be used, an ❛Apostille❜ regarding countries which are signatories of the Hague Convention, an ❛Authentication❜ in respect of countries which have not joined the Convention.

For example, since Australia has signed the Convention, an official Australian document is automatically recognized in South Korea which has also acceded to the Convention if it contains an Apostille.

How to get your document apostilled in Australia

1. Prepare your documents

Only Australian public documents can be apostilled. If your document is not an original public document issued by government agencies or officials, take it to an Australian notary public to be notarized.

2. Submit your documents with the request form  accurately completed

You can submit them at Australian Passport Office and make sure to make an appointment before attending.

You should ask the authority if they can process your Apostille application by hard copy or official PDF before submitting.
