  Certification process here is a certifying your Portuguese document is genuine and legal! This process can be done in two different ways following whether the two countries, Portugal and the country to which you submit Portuguese document, join the Hague Convention ! Since Portugal is a member of the Convention, it all depends on the counter-country belongs to Hague Convention. If the counter-country joins the Convention either, the type of certification you should get is ‘apostille’ and if not, the type of certification is ‘embassy attestation’. 

   Apostille is a simplified version of certification while embassy attestation can be time-consuming. However, there are some procedures are common between apostille and embassy attestation. It’s because you are going to submit Portuguese document to foreign country. So..it is a matter of course for you to translate all your Portuguese in documents into the exact language of the counter-country and get it notarized! Only after that you get your document apostille or embassy certified ! 

   Since this posting is on apostille, let’s look some more details on apostille from Portugal! There is one thing you must have in mind, ‘apostille is only available by the authority of the same country in which the document is created’. Thus, remember that the apostille on Portuguese document is only possible in Portugal. If you are in Portugal, actually you can handle it all by yourself though tough. Whereas, if you are elsewhere, you can’t get it yourself. Thus the way to get apostille cannot but be different. 

   1) In Portugal
     Get the apostille stamp on translated and notarized document from the embassy in Portugal !

   2) Outside of Portugal
     Find someone else in Portugal who can make things done on behalf you!

  Though you are in Portugal where you can handle the whole process alone, as all public matters are, it is also very complicated and time-consuming !
