Do you need a South Korean police certificate?

Recently, lots of people need it for various reasons, but especially for permanent residency or citizenship for Canada. 

Meaning of police certificate:

A police certificate is an official document issued as a result of a background check by the police or government agency of a country to enumerate any criminal records that the applicant may have. If you live in a country for more than 6months, a police certificate of the country is needed for application for permanent residency or citizenship.

There are two kinds of police certificates in South Korea. One is criminal record(immigration and stay), and the other is ‘criminal record(including lapsed records)’. According to CIC(Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), you need to get ‘criminal records check reply(including any lapsed records)’

(If you choose No to the question’Do you live in South Korea now?’, 

it also demands the same kind of criminal records check.)

However, you cannot submit criminal records check (including lapsed records), because it’s for personal verification only. Person who use the reply for the other purposes will be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than 2years or a fine not exceeding 20 million won, in accordance with the second and the third clause of Article 10 in ‘ACT ON THE LAPSE OF CRIMINAL SENTENCES’.

In addition, it’s hard to make your acquaintance receive the PCC for you, as he or she have to undergo more complex process with lots of documents.
