APOSTILLE

If public documents issued in Croatia(e.g. birth, marriage, death certificate, court documents, school and university documents) are to be used abroad, it is necessary to apostille the documents. When you wish to apostille private documents such as power of attorney, notary public must previously certify them. Private documents once certified by notary public acquire the status of public documents.

‘Apostille’ is a simplified legalization procedure that confirms the authenticity of the signature and stamp on documents and the official competence of the person who signed the documents. With an Apostille(a stamp or sticker), an official Croatian document will be valid for legal purposes when presented to an authority outside of Croatia.

ATTENTION: you can have the document authenticated with an Apostille only for countries participating in the Apostille Convention.

This means that single authentication will suffice in ‘Apostille countries’ while documents to be used in the countries which have not joined the Convention would require further authentication by Embassy or consulate of the country in question. So before applying for an Apostille, make sure that the target country in which you need to present the document is signatory to the Convention.

For instance, since the Republic of Croatia has signed the Convention, a Croatian document containing an Apostille is officially accepted in the Republic of Korea which is another member of the Convention.

IN CROATIA

In Croatia, MINISTARSTVO PRAVOSUĐA(Ministry of Justice) is designated to issue an Apostille. Also, Općinski sud(municipal court) can issue an Apostille only for documents issued by bodies(e.g. general register office, notary public, university) that fall within each court’s jurisdiction : Municipal Civil Court in Zagreb, Municipal Court in Dubrovnik, Split, Osijek, Rijeka, etc.
