Apostille in Ukraine

2021.05.26

APOSTILLE

If you’re going overseas for work, study, or permanent residence, you may be asked for identity documents. But a document that is legal in one country is not always legal in another. That is the reason why the document must be legalized in the issuing country so that the receiving authority can check whether it is genuine. In other words, legalization is a process to declare that the document is official and to confirm the authenticity of the signature on the document when it is to be used in foreign countries.

Apostille replaces this legalization of the document if it will be used in a state that is party to the Hague Convention. So if you have been told you need to apostille your document, make sure that the country in which you have to present the document has joined the Convention. An up-to-date list of contracting parties to the Hague Convention is available HERE

An Apostille certifies a signature and stamp on the document and the official competence of the person who signed the document. Documents completed with an Apostille are valid for legal purpose in a member nation to the Convention without any further authentication by Embassy or consulate of the country in question. That means they can be submitted directly to the relevant authority.

For instance, since Ukraine and South Korea are signatories of the Convention, an official Ukrainian document is automatically recognized if it contains an Apostille.

IN UKRAINE

In Ukraine, an Apostille for the documents is placed by:

·  The Ministry of Education and Science (Міністерство освіти і науки) – for documents issued by the educational institutions, state bodies, enterprises, offices and organizations in the field of education and science.

·  The Ministry of Justice (Міністерство юстиції) – for documents issued by judicial bodies and courts and by the public notaries.

·  The State Register Service – for documents issued by this service and its division of regional bodies of the Ministry of Justice.

·  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Міністерство закордонних справ) – for all other documents.
