Briefing On Singapore Apostille !

2020.07.20

Hi there   !

Today i am going to start the article with my memory ! As young, i used to go to Singapore at least three times a year following my dad’s business trip. There, in Singapore, though English is official language and my English was not that bad, i barely understood what they spoke  . Now, i know the language i couldn’t understand was Singlish, not English. Singlish is like a mutation of English influenced by various people like Chinese and Malaysian settled down there!

Plus, Singapore is a country using four different languages as official. Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, English are the four. As these various official languages and Singlish stand for openness of Singapore to the world, Singapore is indeed a very hub of world, specifically economic hub of world. Thus there are different people from different background countries, who left their home country for reasons like work and study!

When staying abroad, there must be some occasions to submit some documents from the country where you currently stay to your home country or at least vice versa. But using a document from one country to another is not that simple as sharing a document with your friend. You should translate it in proper language and notarize the translation to prove the translation is reliable. Then you should go get the certification on authenticity of the document from each embassy or minister of foreign affair!
(Check this out! This is a formula!)

So is using documents from Singapore to other countries. To use or hand in documents from Singapore to somewhere else, you MUST get it certified. Regarding to this process, there is both   good and bad news. Before directly tell you on the bad news, you need to know the two different types of certification. Apostille and embassy attestation are the two types of certification on the genuineness of document. Apostille is a simplified process between members of Hague Treaty whereas embassy attestation is a bit more time-consuming process when at least one party doesn’t join the Treaty. Unfortunately, Singapore is not the part of the Treaty, so that you should go through embassy certification process

On the other hand, good news is that for the public document issued in English to the other English-speaking country you can omit translation and notarization. Since Singapore admits English as an official language you can issue public documents in English. So if you are to use the documents in English-speaking nation, all you have to do is get the certification on the authenticity from each embassy or minister of foreign affair-!

But don’t forget this is only limited to PUBLIC document ! Though private document can be issued in English, the document must be notarized before you get the attestation. Plus, in the case of document that you are to use in one of the non-English-speaking countries, you can’t jump over the translation and notarization, which is the most tricky part. You must translate it and notarize it before you go to embassy or minister of foreign affairs!

This whole process is too complicated for one normal person to handle alone. Getting certification on authenticity itself is a long journey but the journey might get more exhausting when it comes to the case of using documents in non-English-speaking country or private documents.
