                                                          “인생의 세가지 보물”

사람에게 필요한 게 “의식주”라고 한다. 입을 옷과 먹을 음식과 살 집이 있어야 기본적인 삶을 살 수 있다는 것이다. 요즘 젊은 사람들은, 좋은 대학, 좋은 직장, 높은 연봉이 인생의 행복 조건이라고 생각하기도 하고, 나이든 사람들은 건강, 돈, 친구가 행복의 조건이라고 생각하기도 한다.

그런데, 이런 유형적인 조건 외에도 눈에 보이지 않는 무형적인 자산이 있을 것이라고 본다. 나는 인생의 세가지 보물은 “희망과 믿음과 사랑”이라는 생각이 든다.

인생의 첫번째 보물은 희망이라고 본다. “돈이 없는 사람이 가난한 사람이 아니고, 희망이 없는 사람이 진짜 가난한 사람”이라고 한다. 지금 돈이 없더라도, 꿈, 희망, 목표가 있으면, 가난을 극복하고 보다 나은 인생을 만들 수 있다는 것이다.

나는 아버지를 일찍 잃고 홀 어머니 밑에서 가난하게 자랄 때 못 먹어서 얼굴에 마른 버짐을 달고 살았지만, 교회에 다니기 시작하면서, “미래에 이랬으면 좋겠다”고 하는 희망과 꿈을 갖기 시작했다.

기독교에 심취하여, 광신적인 기독교인이 된 큰 형님은 기도를 하던 중에, “동생들이 국제적인 인물이 되게 해달라”는 과대망상적인 기도를 종종 했는데, 형님의 기도에도 불구하고, 내 동생은 중학교때 익사사고로 먼저 죽었고, 나는 미국에 건너와 미국인 교회와 병원에서 목사로 일하게 된 것도 다  큰 형님이 희망의 씨를 뿌려준 덕분이 아닌가 생각한다.

인생의 두번째 보물은 믿음이라고 본다. 믿음은 마음의 눈으로 미래의 희망적인 일을 미리 볼 줄 아는 능력이라고 한다. 인도의 시성 라빈드라낫 타고르는 “믿음은 아직 해가 뜨지 않은 어둠속에서도 동이 틀 것을 느끼며 아침의 노래를 부르는 새”라고 했고, (Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark. -Rabindranath Tagore), 성경의 히브리서 기자는, “믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보지 못하는 것들의 증거” (히브리서 11:1)라고 했듯이, 믿음은 미래의 꿈이 현실로 이루어짐을 부여잡는 행위라고 본다.

찬송가 545장에, “이 눈에 아무 증거 아니 보여도, 믿음만을 가지고서 늘 걸으며”라는 가사가 있고, 성경말씀 고린도후서 5:7에, “우리는 믿음으로 행하고 보는 것으로 하지 아니함이라”고 했는데, 영어로는 “We walk by faith, not by sight.”라고 나와 있다. 이들은 모두, “눈에 보이는 현실에 얽매이지 말고, 미래의 희망과 꿈이 이뤄질 것을 믿고 걸어가라.”고 가르치고 있다.

나는 대학을 다닐 형편이 못되었지만, 가난한 현실에 절망하기 보다, 기숙사의 친구 녹음기에서 들려오던 ABBA의 “I Have a Dream”이란 노래를 들으며, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는, 가나안을 향하여 홍해에 믿음의 발걸음을 내디뎠다.

고마운 대학 동기들의 우정과 사랑의 은혜를 입고, 신학대학을 마치고, 감리교 목사 안수를 받고, 전방부대에서 군목근무를 마친 후, 미국 SMU 신학대학원에서 입학허가서와 장학금을 주어, 미국에 건너오게 된 지 30년이 넘었다. 꿈과 믿음 덕분에 가난한 현실을 뚫고 나올 수 있었다고 본다.

셋째, 이 세상의 가장 중요한 보물은 사랑이라 본다. 꿈과 믿음도 좋지만, 다소 이기적일 수 있어서, 사랑으로 성숙되지 못한 꿈과 믿음의 인생은 수준이 낮은 인생이라고 본다. 자선과 덕을 베푸는 삶, 사랑을 행동으로 실천하는 삶이 진짜 수준 높은 인생이라고 본다. 성경말씀 고린도전서 13장13절에, “믿음과 희망 그리고 사랑. 이 세가지는 항상 있을 것이나, 그 중에 제일은 사랑”이라고 했다.

꿈과 믿음이 미래에 속한다면, 사랑은 지금 있는 곳에서 실천가능하고 사랑의 열매를 주고 받으며 사는 것이 그 어떤 물질적인 성공과 성취보다 더 고상하고 아름다운 일이라고 본다.

인종과 종교와 국적과 문화를 초월하여, 모든 사람들에게 친절과 사랑을 주고 받으며 사는 것이 인생 최고의 보물이 아닐까 생각된다.

                                                          Three Treasures in Life

We need food, clothing, and a house to survive and to maintain dignity. We want health, money and success for happiness. But I value these three treasures of life: hope, faith, and love.

Hope is the first treasure in life. It’s been said, “The poor man is not he who is without a cent, but he who is without a dream.” Even a penniless man can overcome poverty and become self-sufficient, if not rich, with hope, vision, and drive.

I grew up in a poor family. My father died young and my single mother had no money. I suffered from malnutrition in my childhood due to lack of food. After my family converted to Christianity, I began to have hope. I overheard my oldest brother, praying a grandiose prayer, “Bless my younger brothers to become servants of God not just in Korea but also in the world.” Well, my younger brother drowned at the age of 14. Thanks to my brother’s prayers, seedlings of hope and vision were planted in my heart. I came to the U.S. and I am working as a pastor of a United Methodist Church in Milwaukee and working part time as a hospital chaplain. I am living the dream of my childhood. Hope is the first treasure in life.

Faith is the second treasure in life. It’s been said, “Faith is the ability to see the invisible.” A Hindu poet, Rabindranath Tagore, wrote, “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” It is written in the Bible, “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1) Faith and determination enable us to make our hopes and dreams come true.

In the Korean hymn # 545 is a line, “We walk in faith even though we see nothing evident.” The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “We walk by faith, not by sight.” We have to walk in faith and confidence toward our dreams and visions without getting stuck in snares of reality.

At college, I had no financial means of finishing college. But I did not let it deter my dream of getting a college education. While listening to ABBA’s song, “I Have a Dream,” I held on to my faith that I could get to the Promised Land by taking a leap of faith into the scary Red Sea.

Thanks to the friendship and help from my classmates, I could finish college, was ordained in the Korean Methodist Church, and served three years in the Korean Army as an Army Chaplain. I was admitted to SMU’s Perkins School of Theology with a full scholarship. Faith and determination helped me overcome poverty and made my dreams come true.

Love is the third but the greatest treasure of all. Hope and faith are good to a certain extent. But hope and faith can be self-centered and selfish. The life of hope and faith without maturing to the life of love is not the greatest life. The life of virtue, charity and love is the greatest. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 13:13, “Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.”

Faith and hope may deal with the future. But love can be practiced here and now and sharing love is the greatest achievement of all, greater than any material successes and achievements in life.

The greatest treasure in life, it seems to me, is to share love and kindness with people of all walks of life, regardless of race, color, nationality, and lifestyle. Love tops them all.
